• I've generally stopped updating this part of the index, at about the time firms such as Arcor started offering pay-per-call dynamic-IP services, which do not require prior contracts, I guess these pay-per-call services will compete hard with the small IAPs serving private users, so probably the only new entries I expect to make here will be some firms catering not to private users, but corporate users.

  • They only got maybe 100,000 customers in Germany, so are closing down, & shedding their customers, after a 2 month warning.

    Der Online-Dienst MSN (Microsoft Network) stellt seine Tätigkeit als Internet-Zugangs- Dienst- Leister ein. An die Kunden ergeht die Empfehlung, spätestens bis Ende Oktober zu T-Online zu wechseln; die notwendige Software sollen sie demnächst erhalten. Als Anreiz will ihnen T-Online bis Ende des Jahres monatlich zwei Frei-stunden bieten. Vorausbezahlte Gebühren erstattet MSN. Die EMail-Adressen sollen bis Ende Januar kommenden Jahres ihre Gültigkeit behalten.

    Das Web-Angebot MSN-Start bleibt bestehen. Microsoft will es als attraktiven Startpunkt für Internet-Surfer etablieren, um diese dann gezielt zu bestimmten Web-Sites zu führen.

    Der Microsoft-Bereichsleiter für kommerzielle Online-Aktivitäten, Michael Konitzer, begründete die Einstellung der Provider-Tätigkeit damit, daß sich die Situation in Deutschland seit der Markteinführung von MSN grundlegend geändert habe. Es gebe heute viele Internet-Provider, die gute Leistungen zu niedrigen Preisen anbieten. Tatsächlich konnte MSN die Erwartungen nicht erfüllen, die Microsoft bei seiner Einführung 1995 gehegt hatte: Der Erfolg des Dienstes blieb weit hinter dem der Konkurrenz zurück. Während die Zahl der MSN-Kunden hierzulande auf 35.000 geschätzt wird, haben die beiden Marktführer T-Online und AOL zusammen etwa hundertmal mehr Mitglieder. (ct/ad)

Der monatliche Pauschaltarif von 9,99 DM (analog) beziehungsweise 19,99 DM (ISDN) entfällt und wird durch einen Zeittarif ersetzt. Danach müssen alle Metronet-Kunden neben einer monatlichen Grundgebühr von 7,50 DM für jede weitere Online-Stunde 2,70 DM entrichten, wobei der Provider minutengenau abrechnet. Altkunden erhalten in den ersten drei Monaten nach der Tarifumstellung ein "Schmerzensgeld" in Form von jeweils zehn Freistunden. Im Zuge der Preiserhöhung will der Provider seine Leistung steigern. Neben zusätzlichen Angeboten beispielsweise im Bereich von Online-Banking will Metronet vor allem die derzeit miserablen Übertragungsraten (siehe Providertest in c't 4/98) verbessern. (ct/bn)

  There are some parasite lawyers in Germany who Abmahn anyone they can extract money from, in any business, or walk of life, they operate on their own behalf, not engaged by clients. The latest scam (Nov.1997) is to screw ISP firms who publish Ex MWST prices. One of the German index list providers has had his list abused by such a lawyer trying to predate on ISPs ! Any lawyer even thinking of doing that with my list would be very stupid, & presumably fail as:

  • This is my personal summary of ISP providers, maintained infrequently & haphazardly.
  • Some firms ask me to list them, but many don't even know this list exists.
  • There's no guarantee the information is correct, or ever was, & I can guarantee it's not all current !
  • No one has ever paid me either to create or maintain this info, maintenance is infrequent & done at low priority, the quality of the information may be considered commensurate.
  • If you want accurate current information about Germany, you are hereby informed my info is Unreliable & Outdated, so go learn the German language, then read the German Indexes Better yet, go read the official web pages of the German providers, they're in business, with staff paid to keep their information current, I'm not, my page is just an incomplete, inaccurate etc, set of pointers.

  • ISP modem pool contention ratios vary far more often than I update this.
  • Up-link traffic congestion varies far more often than I update this.
  • New providers are not always here.
  • Prices change far more frequently than I update this list.
  • A big entry for an ISP does not imply they are any good, neither does the converse.
  • Whether an ISP has a high bandwidth link is far less relevant than what percentage spare bandwidth he has to the net, during his peak traffic period.
  • Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware) !
